Flag Burning
For some time now there has been a controversy in the USA about flag burning. The Supreme Court has established it is a form of expression protected by the first amendment of the constitution. It would, therefore take another amendment to the constitution to exclude flag burning from this protection and there are many people pushing for such an amendment.
In my view, burning the flag as a means of showing disagreement is quite a disgusting thing to do which shows no consideration for those for who the flag is a very dear symbol. This is true of any symbol of any country, religion or other value which some people may respect.
BUT the fact that something should not be done is not a reason to outlaw it. People do many other disgusting things much more often (like speaking with their mouths full) and we don't outlaw them.
Laws should only prohibit and punish behavior that is truly harmful and not just disgusting or offensive. Precisely the moral superiority of Western civilization is that it allows those who disagree to express themselves freely even if in ways that may be offensive to the majority. The answer to this dilemma is not to outlaw flag burning but to teach ourselves and our children to express our views in ways that are constructive and respectful of other people's sensibilities.
